[Firefox 4 Beta version Update]Firefox 4 beta 2 available to download

firefoxMozilla released the Firefox 4 beta 2  yesterday. There are 1000’s of fixes made by Mozilla in this version. You can now download a second version of the beta of Firefox 4 from the Mozilla website.
The first beta version of Firefox 4 was launched earlier this month, offering built-in support for HD Video and a new Add-Ons Manager.
The new beta version, which is available in 23 languages, adds some new features including 'App Tabs'.
”App Tabs” are tabs for websites you visit regularly and keep open for tasks such as emailing or social networking. Rather than waste tabs on these commonly-accessed sites, you now have smaller App Tabs at the top left-hand side of the browser for quick and easy access.

The third beta of Firefox 4 is expected to land on 6 August.

Features still to be slotted into the browser include “Tab Candy”, which Mozilla hopes will help surfers better organise their tabs providing a separate window where you can lay out your tabs like playing cards and sort them into groups.

The full Firefox 4 beta 2 release notes can be viewed here and the latest build is available for download .

Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta Released

Capture Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta Released. This Beta release represents the near final version of the tools for building applications and games for Windows Phone 7.

It’s time to get serious about building the actual apps and games for Windows Phone 7 that consumers will be looking for starting this holiday season.

One of the things I really want to do is just take a step back and congratulate the entire Windows Phone 7 team.  They have done an amazing job of delivering code month after month on our path to releasing later this year.  Check out this timeline:

  • Feb 2010 – Windows Phone 7 was unveiled at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona
  • Mar 2010 – The application platform was unveiled at MIX 10 in Las Vegas.  With that, we had the first CTP of the Windows Phone Developer Tools.
  • Apr 2010 – The tools received an updated, and the CTP Refresh shipped.
  • Jun 2010 – Windows Phone Marketplace details unveiled at TechEd 2010.  Get the Windows Phone 7 Application Certification Requirements.
  • July 2010 – Beta release of Windows Phone Developer Tools, and the preview developer phones start shipping to ISVs

Here’s a link to the release notes for the beta, but I wanted to talk about a few top level items:

  • Microsoft Expression Blend for Windows Phone – Blend is now integrated completely into the Windows Phone Developer Tools Beta.
  • Developer Registration Utility – Now you can unlock you Windows Phone 7 device for development purposes.
  • XAP Deployment Tool – if you want to deploy XAP files directly to an unlocked device, now you can.
  • The Windows Phone 7 API – we’re getting close to completion.  Many namespaces that were previously distributed over several different DLLs have now been consolidated into one.  In addition, there have been realignments and changes in several other namespaces as well.  Push Notifications, Accelerometer and App Bar APIs have all been updated.
  • Additional Controls – There are some additional controls coming in the next few weeks (i.e. Panorama and Pivot) which didn’t make the beta release.  They are coming soon.
  • Control Templates – Silverlight for Windows Phone control templates have been updated to match evolutions in the overall OS.

Get Trained – Windows Phone 7 Jump Start

The course is organized into four virtual instructor-led sessions that are of 3-hour duration.  They will be presented by forthcoming MS Press authors and MVP's, Andy Wigley and Rob Miles. It will provide developers a jump start for developing Windows Phone 7 applications.  The Labs will be completed offline with office hours access to the instructors.

The dates for these course sessions are:

  • July 20 – 8am: Session One: Getting Started with Microsoft Windows Phone and Silverlight
  • July 20 – 1pm: Session Two: Programming Game Applications with XNA

  • July 22 – 1pm: Session Four:  Review and Wrap Up

Go register for the course now!

Devices for Developers

We made a promise last month that we would be getting pre-production preview devices to developers this month. We are keeping that promise. In fact, the very first preview devices were awarded last week to a pair of pretty amazing high-school students who won the Windows Phone “Rockstar” contest as part of the Imagine Cup. When we saw what they had done, we knew we had to get them preview phones.

Starting next Monday (July 19th), we start shipping the devices more broadly. Sadly, we will not be able to meet all of that demand.  We are planning to set up deploy and test labs in major cities to make it a little easier for everyone who wants to have access to a preview phone to have it. More on that soon.

Lastly, to get your name in the queue, assuming you haven’t already sent in an email, you can now send an email to wp7req@microsoft.com.  A field representative will get back to you as soon as possible. Again, these are preview phones, so they are limited in quantity. When you send email, please include the following information:

  • Your name
  • Company name, if applicable
  • What city/state/country you are located in
  • App(s) you plan on developing (category and brief description)

How to use IIS Developer Express from Visual Studio?

IIS developer express is a new web server from Microsoft for ASP.NET developers for non production use. The new developer edition of IIS comes with a lot of cool features from IIS and Visual Studio's built-in web server combined in to one software, making it a better tool for developers.
As of now, the IIS developer express is not a separate download and there is no separate installer. It need to be installed through the WebMatrix software install. WebMatrix can be installed using an installer called "Web Platform Installer", which can be used to install a bunch of web development tools from Microsoft and third parties.

On 7 July 2010, Microsoft announced Web PI 3 along with WebMatrix beta. WebMatrix is an integrated web application development tool which include a developer version of IIS called 'IIS Developer Express'.
The Web PI 3 installer can install a large number of web application development tools, including:

  • WebMatrix (which includes IIS Developer Express)
  • SQL Server Compact
  • SEO tools
  • Third party web application tools like DotNetNuke, Umbraco, WordPress and Joomla!
  • SQL Server Express
    and many more.

    IIS_developer_express_installer
The components included in Web PI installer are dynamically loaded from Microsoft web services, so this list can change and add more stuff any time.
You can download WebMatrix Beta installer (Web PI 3 beta) from here: http://www.microsoft.com/web/webmatrix/download/

As of now, there is no Visual Studio integration for IIS Express. If you like to use IIS Developer Express from Visual Studio, your options are limited to:
    1. Open WebMatrix, start IIS Express and then run your Visual Studio website against the site hosted in IIS Express.
    2. Launch IIS Express from command prompt.

Manage IIS Express from system tray:
There is an IIS Express System Tray utiltiy (iisexpresstray.exe) which places an icon in the system tray and allow you to manage the sites hosted in IIS Express.
This utility allows you to view the list of all sites hosted in IIS Express and you can start/stop the sites from here.
When IIS developer express is started, by default the system tray utility also starts, unless you disable it explicitly.
One of the problems I found with this system tray utility is, it always starts in the bottom right corner of my screen, with only a small portion of it in the visible area of the screen. Rest of the screen is hidden outside the visible boundary of the screen. I had no ways to drag this screen to a visible area. The drag option simply does not work since the screen does not have a draggable title bar. My only option was to expand the size of the window so that most part of the content is visible.

  • How to run IIS developer express using command prompt(CMD)

IIS developer express is just launched and is currently under beta. In this article, I will cover how to launch IIS developer express from command prompt and how to use various command line parameters.

    IIS Express executable and location

The primary executable file for IIS Express is "iisexpress.exe", located under "C:\Program Files\Microsoft WebMatrix". Notice that iisexpress is placed under the folder of WebMatrix.

    3353-82245-Enable-directory-browsing

How to launch IIS Developer Express from Command Prompt?

In order to launch IIS Express from command prompt, open command prompt. Navigate to the folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft WebMatrix.
You can type "iisexpress.exe" from command prompt to launch the default site.
If you like to open a specifi site, you can use the command line switch "/site".
    Example:
    iisexpress /site:mywindowsclub

This will start the site mywindowsclub in the port specified for it. You may not see the site opening in the browser. When you launch the iisexpress from command prompt, it will start the iisexpress process and also will launch the iis express system tray icon.

If you like to open a website from any folder in your location, you can use the switches /path and /port to specify the path and port number respectively.

    Example:

    iisexpress /path:c:/myprojects/mywindowsclub/ /port:9010

You may experience a problem here. If you like to start a site from a folder, you should have configured the default document for iisexpress.

Another option is, enable directory browsing. To enable this, run the following command:

    appcmd set config /section:system.webServer/directoryBrowse /enabled:true

Microsoft released Windows Server “Aurora” features in Video

images Microsoft announced the  new small business server, code name “Aurora” .Microsoft have just released a 14 minute video walkthrough of some of the  server platform’s key features.

Specifically, the video demonstrates the ease with which user accounts can be managed, an outline of the storage pool features of Aurora, as well as information on client and server backup. It’s clear that there’s little requirement for deep server expertise to get up and running with Aurora.

The features demonstrated will be familiar to Windows Home Server owners, although the build demonstrated does have a number of improvements yet to be seen in Windows Home Server “Vail” Preview, including new graphics for the storage pool.

At this point, Aurora’s cloud integration – perhaps the most interesting new feature – is yet to be demonstrated – check out the video below.

Mozilla Explains Why Firefox 4 Has Tabs on Top [VIDEO]

firefox Firefox4 coming soon, and it’ll carry with it a lot of design and UI changes. One of the biggest ones is that the default setting will be to place tabs on top, a design Google Chrome popularized.

For years, there’s been heated debate in the Firefox  community over whether the tabs should be on top or below the address bar. To explain Mozilla’s decision, Alex Faaborg of the User Experience Design team recorded this seven minute video explaining the four key reasons Firefox 4 defaults to tabs on top. Watch the video to learn about them all.

If you hate the tabs on top look though, don’t worry: Faaborg makes it very clear that tabs on top is just the default setting, and that users will have full control over where their tabs are located.

Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 platform preview 3 today

Capture_thumb[1] Microsoft released Internet Explorer 9 platform preview 3 today, marking the third and possibly final release prior to the beta phase.

Microsoft originally unveiled Internet Explorer 9 at PDC 2009. IE 9 will take advantage of the power of the GPU for all page rendering and developers can exploit this using CSS, DHTML and javascript. A new JS engine (codenamed Chakra) will also be built into Internet Explorer 9 with greater interoperability and standards support all round. Features such as rounded corner CSS support will be built in.Microsoft is also planning broader support for HTML5 in Internet Explorer 9 through its new script engine. Microsoft recently performed W3C Web Standards tests on IE9, including HTML5, SVG 1.1 2nd edition, CSS3 media queries, CSS3 borders & backgrounds, CSS3 selectors, DOM level 3 core, DOM level 3 events and DOM level 2 style. Microsoft, with the help of W3C, performed a total of 192 tests on a variety of browsers. Internet Explorer 9 scored 100% in all eight tests, while every other browser, except Firefox in DOM level 2 style tests, didn't score perfect in any of the test categories.

Microsoft originally began scouting for Internet Explorer 9 beta testers in March. In an email to testers, Justin Saint Clair - Program Manager of Internet Explorer invited testers to join a "select group of IE9 Tech Feedback participants." Neowin understands that Microsoft will introduce a beta of Internet Explorer 9 in August. Today's Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview 3 is available at Microsoft's IE Test Drive site.

    Opera 10.60 Alpha released

Opera It has been very little time since the release of Opera 10.50, which blew past all the previous versions of Opera in performance, and gave other browsers some serious competition. Now Opera is already on track for Opera 10.60 with a release of its first Alpha.

For those Opera fans using Linux, there is both good news and bad. Bad news, Opera 10.50 will not be getting a stable release for Linux. Opera 10.50 for Linux was supposed to come with improved support for KDE and Gnome, and with it getting skipped, this means Linux users will have to wait much longer before a stable release. The good news is that with Opera 10.60 the Linux, Mac OS and Windows builds will come to sync, and Opera Software claims that they will strive to ensure that they remain in sync. Opera 10.60 will bring all the features that were supposed to come with Opera 10.50 for Linux.

Opera 10.60 continues improving the browsers performance with a claimed 75% improvement in performance over Opera 10.50! If these claims are true, this would make Opera 10.60 the fastest browser yet.

Opera 10.60 also continues to improve the Opera UI. With Opera 10.50 came support for Windows Aero Glass, and the reduction of UI chrome by removing the menu. The menu was instead moved to an Opera button on the top-left of the window. In 10.60 Opera now has a better, more clearly labelled menu button. mouse-over tab previews are also much smoother and better.

In Opera 10.60, tabs opened for Opera features such as the download manager, history manager, bookmarks etc showed tab previews like any other tab. Now they will show icons for the respective functions instead, making the interface much clearer.

Google asking employees to use Mac or Linux, instead of Windows

1862642232nav_logo5w Google is reportedly phasing out the internal use of Microsoft’s Windows operating system because of security concerns. New hires at Google are now being given the option of using Apple’s Mac computers or PCs running the Linux operating system.
The directive to move to other operating systems began in January 2010, after Google’s Chinese operations were hacked. According to a Google employee, the move to phase out Windows is also an effort to run the company on Google’s own products, including its forthcoming Chrome OS.
Windows is known for being more vulnerable to attacks by hackers and more susceptible to computer viruses than other operating systems. The greater number of attacks on Windows has much to do with its prevalence, which has made it a bigger target for attackers, reports Financial Times.

Google Chrome 5.0 Stable Released,Download Now

chrome Google has released 5.0 version of its web browser "Chrome". Here is what the Official Google Blogsays:

After a bit of evolution and lots of work from the team, we're thrilled to introduce a new stable version of Chrome for Windows, Mac and Linux. Since last December, we’ve been chipping away at bugs and building in new features to get the Mac and Linux versions caught up with the Windows version, and now we can finally announce that the Mac and Linux versions are ready for prime time.

The performance bar for all three versions keeps getting higher: today’s new stable release for Windows, Mac and Linux is our fastest yet, incorporating one of our most significant speed improvements to date. We’ve improved by 213 percent and 305 percent in Javascript performance by the V8 and SunSpider benchmarks since our very first beta, back in Chrome’s Cretaceous period (September 2008).

Today’s new stable release comes with a few new features, including the ability to synchronize browser preferences across computers, new HTML5 capabilities and a revamped bookmark manager.

Google Chrome - will be the default browser in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition

chrome The Opensource Chromium browser - the base behind Google Chrome - will be the default browser in Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Netbook Edition - at least until Alpha3.

The decision, taken today in the Default Netbook App Selection session at the Ubuntu Developer Summit, was based on a variety of reasons not least of which favoured the good code base, upstream maintenance and the browser speed. The wide plugin base and the flexibility of webkit were also seen as plus.

Issues raised concerning Chromium's non-native look, lack of support for native scrollbars and issues with printing will lead the Netbook team to decide, by Alpha 3, whether or not it will remain default for the full cycle. One area that will certainly need consideration will be compatability with the new global menu bar coming in the netbook edition.
During the discussion other alternative browsers mooted were Midori - which was praised for its speed and active development but untimely rejected due to lack of user awareness and the surging popularity of Chromium

Microsoft set to fix 17 year old Windows vulnerability coming week

windows Microsoft has confirmed it is on course to issue a patch next Tuesday for a recently discovered 17 year old Windows vulnerability.

the recent discovery of a Windows vulnerability that has existed since the release of Windows NT 3.1 in 1993. The vulnerability has only recently been published but it appears 32-bit Windows operating systems have inherited the flaw since NT 3.1.

Microsoft issued a Security Advisory on the vulnerability. The software giant described the flaw as an "Elevation of Privilege (EoP) vulnerability in the Windows kernel, affecting all currently supported versions of 32-bit Windows." 64-bit versions of Windows, including Windows Server 2008 R2, are not affected. The problem exists due to a flaw in the Virtual DOS Machine (or VDM), which was used to support 16-bit applications. The flaw allows for a 16-bit program to manipulate the kernel stack of processes.

In a company blog posting on Thursday, Jerry Bryant, Sr. Security Communications Manager at Microsoft confirmed "we are on track to release an update for this issue next Tuesday (February 9)." Microsoft will also be releasing 13 bulletins - five rated Critical, seven rated Important, and one rated Moderate - addressing 26 vulnerabilities.

Microsoft looks Windows 7 battery warning issues

Microsoft has confirmed it is investigating a problem causing some Windows 7 users to receive incorrect battery warnings on their laptops.

    bat

The warning is triggered when a laptops BIOS detects a battery replacement is required. Windows 7 provides the following alert: "Consider replacing your battery. There is a problem with your battery, so your computer might shut down suddenly." One user who spoke to The Register claimed their laptop battery life had decreased from two hours to half hour and others posted their experiences in a TechNet forums thread.

Microsoft officials said on Tuesday the company is looking into the issue, "we are investigating this issue in conjunction with our hardware partners, which appears to be related to system firmware," a Microsoft spokesperson confirmed.

Some commenter's in the TechNet thread are hinting at a class action lawsuit with one stating "If my battery has been permanently damaged or a fix not issued quickly, I will be forced to seek a class action lawsuit. Thank you."

Microsoft said it's working with PC manufacturers to determine the issue, "We are working with our partners to determine the root cause and will update the forum with information and guidance as it becomes available."

Google dropping support for Internet Explorer 6

1862642232nav_logo5w The problem with Internet Explorer 6 is that it fails at running some of the standard features of today's web development technologies, meaning that it gives web developers a rather hard time when they put websites together. If the market share were small, this wouldn't matter so much, but Internet Explorer 6 still holds a decent-sized portion compared to other browsers, due to companies and other organizations refusing to switch from it. Despite the fact that there are many faster, more secure, and generally better browsers, such as Google Chrome, Internet Explorer 8, Safari and Firefox, a lot of companies have yet to make the upgrade.

The announcement earlier, made on the Google Enterprise Blog, states that beginning March 1, Google Docs and Google Sites will no longer work correctly when viewed in Internet Explorer 6. These two services have a lot of users, so hopefully, this will help make a difference when it comes to what browsers are being used. Keep in mind that the company is only starting with those two; support for Internet Explorer 6 will be phased out as time progresses, giving users some time to switch. The announcement closed with,

"2010 is going to be a great year for Google Apps and we want to ensure that everyone can make the most of what we are developing. Please take the time to switch your organization to the most up-to-date browsers available."

Google may host games on YouTube

    youtube

The recent patent application was brought to the public's attention,The patent lends people to believe that Google may begin using YouTube to host some sort of online games. Google's patent, Web-Based System for Generation of Interactive Games Based on Digital Videos, was filed back in February, but was just published in December. The patent brings about the idea of interactive video clips that can contain link objects, which can be used to jump to specific parts of the video. This can sort of be understood like a DVD menu, where clicking on a certain choice will jump you to a certain scene of the movie.

    Here's the patent description:

"A video may have associated with it one or more annotations, which modify the appearance and/or behavior of a video as it was originally submitted to an online video hosting site. Some examples of annotations are graphical text box annotations, which display text at certain locations and certain times of the video, and pause annotations, which halt playback of the video at a specified time within the video. Some annotations, e.g. a graphical annotation (such as a text box annotation) comprising a link to a particular portion of a target video, are associated with a time of the target video, which can be either the video with which the annotation is associated, or a separate video. Selecting such annotations causes playback of the target video to begin at the associated time. Such annotations can be used to construct interactive games using videos, such as a game in which clicking on different portions of a video leads to different outcomes."

As confusing as the above description is, it's very hard to ignore the possibilities implied.

    how ever,YouTube Games. Interesting indeed.

Facebook made new design to some users

    facebook_logo

Facebook is notorious for tweaking their layout on a regular basis. Back on December 19th, we got word that they were testing a new design and that it would go live in the coming weeks. Now, it seems that they have finalized the design.

The notable changes are as follows:
Search bar moved from the right to the left-center (next to Facebook logo)
    Navigation bar has been simplified
Sidebar is scaled down (similar to Facebook Lite)
Duplicate link to profile is gone
Settings and login/logout have been combined into an "account" dropdown
Application bar is gone (bookmarked apps get listed on left sidebar)
Notifications are gone, replaced by a counter next to the application link in left sidebar

Many of these changes were expected and announced back in October at the Facebook Developer Garage. Users seem to be fairly pleased with the simpler design. The notifications change is a big deal, as it will prevent the never ending spam that users receive from application notifications. Overall, users are saying that the design is more streamlined and snappier.
